How do I reduce Excel file size

I made a relatively minor, routine update of data in an Excel file and it
suddenly doubled in size. I have deleted excess rows and columns, and have
even tried deleting the largest sheets from the workbook, but the size
doesn't decrease significantly. It's almost as if there's a hidden object in
the workbook. How can I determine the cause of this increase in size and
reduce it back to normal?

UPDATE - I have been able to isolate the problem to certain rows in one sheet
of my file. When I deleted the sheet, the file shrunk to its normal size.
When I hold the cursor, the cursor slows dramatically when it reaches certain
rows of the spreadsheet. Yet there is nothing different about those rows
than in a prior version of the file which was 1/2 the file size. How can I
figure out what needs to be changed on those rows?

Well, hopefully someone can benefit from this monologue! SOLUTION: Import
prior version of worksheet, update data, and use 'replace' command to link
formulas to the new replacement worksheet. Worked like a charm. The key was
isolating the worksheet causing the problem, and this was accomplished by
deleting a worksheet, saving the file as a new version, and checking to see
if the file size was dramatically reduced.

Jim has the answer please see his answer below.

"Try "Deleting) (not clear contents) all of the cells beneath your last row
of
data and to the right of the last column of data and save the spreadsheet.
Sometimes that will decrease the memory size of the sheet. Otherwise get rid
of logo's shapes.... "
