how do I recover a .doc autobackup if I forgot to save changes?

I was working on a word 97 document on my Laptop running win2000pro.
I started the document 3 days ago.
I worked on it for several hours yesterday, but I can't find the updated copy.
I have autobackup set to save every 3 minutes.

I can't find the updated document, or an autobackup file of it anywhere on
my laptop.

My questions are:
a) If I have autosave set on, and I accidentally hit the wrong button when
closing the file, and don't save changes, does the autobackup file get
deleted?
b) if not, where is it saved and under what file format?
