How do I put a picture in the background?

When i used an older version of Powerpoint a few years ago, I used to know of
a way to add a picture to a template, and then put that picture in the
background so that it was sort of faded, and you could see the text on the
template. Well, I can't seem to do that on Powerpoint 2003. Maybe I'm just
doing something wrong, I don't know. Could you please help me out?

Thanks!!

Forgot to add---
Make rectangle over all of the slide
Right click on rectangle
Choose format Autoshape
Pick white as your fill and no lines
Lower transparency
Now you have your faded image and can put some text on.
Hope this helps!!!

How you fade the photo really depends on how you insert it onto the slide or
the slide background. If you add the photo using Insert|Picture|From File,
you can choose the "washout" option on the Picture toolbar. Click the
"color" icon to see a dropdown with grayscale, washout, etc.

Otherwise, John's methods will also work.
