How do I make AutoNumLgl start numbering again at 1?

I want AutoNumLgl to number starting at 1 up to a certain point in my
document; but then I want the numbering to resume again at 1 at a latter
point in my document. Or I want to achieve this in any way I can. For
example, I'd like my numbering to look like this:

10.1
10.2
10.3
10.4
11.1
11.2
12.1
12.2
12.3

I can put the number before the decimal point in manually if I have to
(that's not a problem), but I'd like some autonumbering to fill in after the
decimal point. So, in the above example, the autonumbering would give:

1
2
3
4

then reset to 1 again to give

1
2

then reset to 1 again to give

1
2
3

Thanks.

Is there some reason why you have to use AUTONUMLGL rather than LISTNUM or
paragraph numbering? What version of Word?

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for responding.

I'm using Word 2003.

I don't have to use AUTONUMLGL other than it seems to work the best as far
as it works in this regard (only I can't get it to reset to start listing at
1). I tried LISTNUM and paragraph numbering but wasn't able to get them to do
what I want.

I don't want to number every paragraph, and I don't want to subsume my text
in lists. All I want is to be able to insert a numbering at the front of
CERTAIN paragraphs, then have the auto numbering resume whenever I use it for
another paragraph (and renumber if I later insert another number field), then
reset to start at 1 again when I stiplulate.

For example, the document would look like this:

10.1 texttexttexttext

texttexttexttexttext

texttexttexttexttext

10.2 texttexttexttext

10.3 texttexttexttext

texttexttexttext

11.1 texttexttexttext

texttexttexttext

11.2

etc.

Also, if I inserted a number field between 10.2 and 10.3, then the insert
would be 10.3 and bump the old 10.3 up to 10.4 and the rest of the 10.x (x
greater than 4) up one number too.

Is that clear what I want to achieve?

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

I recall now that I went with AUTONUMGL instead of LISTNUM because I could
get rid of the trailing period with AUTONUMGL while LISTNUM doesn't allow me
to reset the numbering to start again at 1 anyway.

And just now I tried using Format->Bullets And Numbering.

That does exactly what I want in terms of resetting to start at 1 again. I
recall now that that's what I got before. BUT, I don't know how to get this
to do three things:

(1) Place the number AFTER the decimal point. For example, I want numbers:

10.1
10.2
etc.

But the function gives me

1. 10.
2. 10.
etc

since the function demands that its inserted number start the paragraph (as
opposed to AUTONUMLGL or AUTONUM, which allow me to place the number where I
want it to be).

(2) Get rid of the trailing period.

(3) Get rid of the tab that the function places after the number. I did set
the option for 0" tab, but a tab still keeps kicking in.

So, I need the best of AUTONUMLGL (place number where I want it to go, and
without period and without following tab) and Bullets And Numbering (start
renumbering wherever I want to).

Thanks.

You should be able to get what you want with outline numbering on Styles,
assuming your 10 etc. are also live numbers coming from a count of headings
or other paragraphs of a particular style. You do need to set this up with
some care, following the steps *exactly* as described by Shauna Kelly at

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

I would recommend you try this exactly as described first, so you understand
what is going on, before adapting it to your Styles. To get rid of the tab,
you need to change the "Follow number with:" setting to space.

Once you understand the paragraph Style method, you might also want to look
at my article of restarting lists at

http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/ListRestartMethods.htm

However, if you prefer a field approach (which is more flexible on where you
can place numbers, and doesn't involve tabs and indents), then LISTNUM will
give you what you want. You will need to start by setting up the outline
format you need via Format > Bullets and Numbering - give it a name in the
ListNum field name box. Then when you insert the LISTNUM field itself you
will see the name you gave in the list along with the built-in default
formats. You can reset the value where necessary using the \s switch. Once
you have this working you can put the LISTNUM fields for each level into
AutoTexts and place on toolbar for ease of insertion.

Have a play with these and post back if you need more specific help.

Thanks, Margaret.

I'm going to work with your suggestions this weekend.

I'll let you know.
