How do I link an action button to an object action?

When I choose an action button, it seems I can only use it to hyperlink it to
a slide or to a program. The object action option looks grey and not
selectable. I wanna make object fade in by clicking on the action button. How
can I? Thanks! Sonia Coleman, you're fantastic and great help to all of us!
 
You dont need to use an action button but if you do set its action to nothing.

Set up the fill change or whatever and then click the drop down menu in the
custom animation and navigate to Effect Options. Set the trigger to the
action button (or just a normal shape)
 
Thank you John, you're very helpful too. I had never explored the trigger
part in effect option. I know I don't need to use the action button to
animate an object, it's just an esthetic matter.
