Hi,

Is there a way to tell if the connections to other computers (all behind a
router using the same DSL connection) is through intranet or internet?

The reason for the question is to simulate connections from an external
environment, such as using an Internet connection at a remote location.

Many thanks.

The way I test remote access for Remote Desktop (RDP), Secure Shell (SSH)
VPN, etc is like this...

* First I test over the local LAN...This illustrates RDP but its applicable
for anything...

* Then I make sure the appropriate ports are forwarded correctly through my
firewall/router by going to this site from the PC I am running RDP on and
want to remotely access/control...In the case of RDP that would be TCP Port
3389...

* Then I use a laptop to dial into my ISP and try to access my home LAN and
RDP PC over the public internet.

* Lastly the ultimate test is to go to a nearby wireless public hotspot and
make sure I can connect...

The above scheme works for me testing RDP, SSH or VPN access to my home
LAN...

Hi,

Thanks and from the second test, we are using intranet for the connection
and we did not pass all tests :(

Guess we need to work on that before we could test on a local cafe shop.

Many thanks.

Keep in mind that when testing from one local PC to another local PC you
must use the local LAN IP of the PC your trying to connect to. Its *NOT* a
valid test to call a PC using the public IP of the router from another local
PC on the same LAN.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip and it works for us on the local test.

I guess we need to sort out the router issue first and then set up VPN and
then test from the external environment.

Many thanks.
