how do I join a newsgroup?
Don't use the webnews-for-dummies interface to newsgroups. If you can't
find an option there to subscribe (which probably means they need to
leave a cookie on your host so they can track your choices) then they
don't provide that features. Start using a real newsreader, like
Outlook Express, Forte, Xnews, XanaNews, Gravity, or whichever one you
like. A real newsreader program will have far more features than a
webnews interface, like being able to flag threads to watch and sorting
the headers list so the watched threads are at the top. They also let
you subscribe to newsgroups which merely means the newsgroup remains
available for later selection in the next session of using that
newsreader program.
Check with your ISP as to what, if any, newsgroups service that they
provide and the setup needed to use their NNTP server. You can connect
to the msnews.microsoft.com server but that one just carries the
microsoft.public.* newsgroups (but that would also eliminate using up
any monthly quota with your own ISP's NNTP server by using the free one
from Microsoft when you participate in those groups).
