How do I insert text without erasing text already in the document

Often I will type text in a Word document and decide to insert another
thought. When I try to insert that thought the software erases the text
already in place rather than move the existing text to the right, allowing me
to insert the additional text. In the past I know I had the ability to insert
text without loosing the text already in place. What do I need to do in order
to have this capability.

Press the "insert" button on your keyboard. You'll see at the bottom of the
MS Word window, a button that says "OVR" will grey out. That means
overstrike. Press the insert key on your keyboard to toggle between
overstrike and insert.
