I have a hyperlinked object in the bottom-left of my ppt slide which i
need to click to get elsewhere. However this is too close to the
button panel that appears when i move the mouse and i am scared that i
may by mistake press the back arror instead of the hyperlinked object

Is there any way i can use the mouse but not allow the translucent
button panel at bottom-left to appear when i move the mouse
BTW - Is there any technical way to refer to this set of buttons?

What Sonia said, and if all your navigation is done through clicking
buttons and hyperlinks, you might want to go to Kiosk mode: Slide Show >
Set Up Show > Click on view at a kiosk.

MS calls it a "popup toolbar"

And though you can turn it off on your own PC, it may or may not appear on
other PCs when they play your presentation; it's a PowerPoint-level setting,
not a per-presentation setting (except that it's disabled when your
presentation is in Kiosk mode, so as David says: Recommended!)

So you might call it something a bit stronger than the terms MS has chosen.
Just let us know first so we can plug our ears ...
