How do I have Word showing while also reading and scrolling web?

I am working on a synopsis of a chapter and am using online resources. I
minimized Word to take up only half the screen, but when I hit any part of
the web page I am viewing to scroll down or whatever, it minimizes Word all
the way. I want it to stay on the screen so I can just refer to the website
and then type my notes.

That sounds like a weirdness of your web browser -- you should be able
to resize each window to occupy half the screen (or however you want
to divide it).
