How do I go back to the inbox after viewing a message?

It automatically goes to the next message which is annoying.

Try as I may, I can't repro' what you describe :-)

Are you using the Preview Pane, View>layout?
 
What you neglected to say is that you deleted a message
while viewing it in its own window (not the preview pane).
That will automatically display the next message. If you
don't want that to happen, close the message window, then
delete the message from the message list pane.
