how do I get the word "sample" to appear on the page in gray

I would like the word "sample" to appear in the background of a page...how do
I do that?
 
You are describing a watermark. How you insert it depends on what version of
Word you have.

Word 2007: Page Layout | Watermark

Word 2002/2003: Format | Background | Printed Watermark

Word 2000 and earlier: "HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Word 97 and in
Microsoft Word 2000"
