I have a set of documents , not created by me, and they have a bunch of
merge fields in them

Anyways, the problem I'm having with these docs is when I open them I first
get this message:

"doc should be opened as read-only unless changes to it need to be saved.
Open as read-only?" Yes, No, Cancel.

Looking at the properties of the doc, the readonly button is not checked.
So how do I clear this first.

So after I answer the readonly question another message comes up:

"Opening the document will run the following SQL command:
SELECT * FROM C:\Forms\Forms by State - MS Word - Scott\California\CA Subord
data.doc.
Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to
continue."

How do I get rid of this message too?

For the second, see "Opening This Will Run the Following SQL Command"

For the first, perhaps the document was saved with the "Read-only
recommended" box checked on the Security tab of Tools | Options?

Thanks Suzanne, just unclicking the "recommended read only" button fixed both
messages. They don't come up anymore.
You're beautiful girl!

Glad that worked out for you!
