How do I get rid of the Ruler?

Every time I open a new Word document, the ruler is shown on the blank doc.
I
remove the checkmark from >View>Ruler, but the next Word document shows up
with a
ruler again.

How can I tell Word that I do not want to see this *** ruler any more. I
have no use for it!

Can we swap? I *want* to see the ruler, and half the time Word opens without
it.
