How can I make the ruler show automatically?

I would like my word document to show ruler by default but don't know how to
do it

What version of Word are you using?
Have you ticked Ruler on the View menu? This should stay after closing the
Word session. If not come back.

Word 2003. Yes I've tried that but it doesn't stay.

Have you tried doing the change within the Normal.dot template?

I tried something else that seems to have worked. I set the rulers and then
went to page setup and cliked default. If it doesn't work I'll do what you
said.
