How do I get rid of line?

B

Brett

I'm using Word 2002. I type a few hyphens and hit enter. For example
----------

Now there is a longer solid line that I can not get rid of.

Any suggestions how I make this line go away?

Thanks,
Brett

Brett,
First you should disable the following Tools - AutoCorrect - Autoformat as
you type - Borders. Word creates a paragraph border when you type three or
more hypens or underscores and even equal signs and hit enter. You can
eliminate the line by hitting Ctrl+Q or you can use the borderbutton in the
toolbar of tables.

If you don't want to turn this feature off permanently, sit hit Undo as soon
as the conversion takes place. That will undo any AutoCorrect or AutoFormat
immediately.

Ctrl+Q didn't do anything. Neither did clicking the border button on the
tables and borders toolbar.

I can't click the line to give it focus. I move the mouse pointer over the
line and get an up/down arrow. I can click and drag the line down, which
moves the text down. Then I can drag it back up. That's it.

I've eliminated the line by cutting that particular section of text and
pasting into Notepad then copying and pasting back into Word.

Brett,
Did you try the link that Suzanne suggested. It is often a case of being in
the right paragraph to hit CTRL+Q or to select all paragraphs and apply a no
border to them. The only other line you could have is a horizontal line
which is kind of a graphic line and not a border. In this case it should be
easy though to select it when you click on it as black little squares will
appear. Such lines can be applied via the borderbutton in the tables toolbar
or via the menu Format borders and lines. But again I do not think you have
created this kind of line.

Luc is right. If the line was created by typing hyphens and pressing Enter,
it *is* a border. If you've pressed Enter several times attempting to get
rid of it, you've simply added more paragraphs to which this bottom border
is applied. Every time you remove the bottom border from one paragraph, it
will move up to the previous one. You have to remove it from all of them.
