How do I get pictures rather than symbols from 'my pictures'?

How do I get pictures rather than miscellaneous squares and symbols when I go
into "my pictures" on microsoft word and try to open them as I would open any
other document?

Don't use File > Open. Instead, use Insert > Picture > From File.
