How do I get Outlook XP (2002) to launch?

When I try to launch my Outlook XP (Office 2002), I get a message indicating
I must have Instant Messenger 4.01 or greater. I have IM 6.0! How do I
access Outlook?

Are you sure it doesn't say Outlook Express or Internet Explorer? As far as
I know, there is no requirement in Outlook for IM.
