how do i get a hightlighted word to deleate when backspace is hit

before when i highlighted a word and hit backspace the whole word would be
deleated, now when i do it the cursor just moves to the beginning of the word

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
