how do I get a cell in excel to show the formula and not the word

I have a problem with excel. When I enter a formula into a cell and hit enter
I get the word "Value" in the cell and not the answer to the formula. I know
I am missing something because it's only my excel at work that does this the
one I use at home shows me the answer and not the word. Someone tell me what
I am missing. Is it in my options setup or in the worksheet itself? Any help
will do. Tks

You can get #value! errors when your formula tries to do arithmetic using cells
that contain non-numeric data.

If you have 1234 in A1 and Bertie in A2, if you type:
=a1+a2
You'll get the error.
1234+Bertie doesn't make sense to excel.
