I have a publication that needs an index but the index items are not marked
and I don't know the subject well enough to know which words to mark. I want
to generate an index of ALL the words in the document and then delete the
obvious ones that DON'T apply. Can I do that? How?

This sounds like a lot of work to create a truly awful index. If you really
want to go down this route you'd need to produce a list of words in the
document (see
http://groups-beta.google.com/group...read/thread/513572d0827ff381/8c06a482bd77eef6)

and then use it as a concordance file (see Word Help).

But you would be much better off getting the author or a professional
indexer to mark up the document, or even just applying some common sense on
an 'if it looks significant mark it' basis.
