How do I format slide numbers to show number of slides as well?

I am trying to format my slide numbers so the number of slides appear as
well. Example:

Slide 1 of 12

Surely there is a way to do this in my ancient version of powerpoint
(1987-2003).

go to your slide master and add in the "of 12" after the slide number symbol
