How do I force outlook 2002 to go to the OST file not Exchange ser

When in on line mode using a VPN even though all syncronization is done and
the clients outlook is up to date. When you click on an email outlook always
goes to the exchange server to download and display the message or any
attachments.

This is very slow, although it is very fast if the user logs off and goes
into Offline mode and uses the date in the ost file

As we have set up shared calendars and public folders we dont want the user
to keep switching on and off line mode

I am sure I have read a Knowlege base artical about this but am unable to
find it

Is there a fix?

Or will we have to get our customer to upgrade to Outlook 2003?

Any help would be appriciated

Yes, Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook 2003 works that way. Classic offline
mode requires you to restart Outlook.

It does seem strange that outoook 2002 when on line goes to the Exchange
server for data when there is an OST copy on the local hard drive.

I realise that when on a local network this is not a problem. But when
accessing the Exchange server from a remote office via a VPN it almost
un-unusable!

If Outlook 2003 is the ONLY answer is there a free upgade available?

My customer is using SBS 2000

No, that is how it worked; ost-files were for offline use only. Using it as
a cache was introduced in Outlook 2003.

No, but for each Exchange 2003 CAL you are also allowed to install Outlook
2003 on a client.
