how do i find the average difference between a set of numbers

Not sure this is what you're looking for, but....

If you have a list of numbers in the range A1:A10:

Entered as an array - CTRL,SHIFT,ENTER:

=AVERAGE(IF(ISNUMBER(A1:A10-A2:A10),ABS(A1:A10-A2:A10)))

If it's a paired comparison (ie difference of A1 - B1, A2 - B2 etc
then

=average(abs(a1:a10-b1-b10)) entered as an array formula (ctrl shif
enter
