How do I filter messages based on the first letter of the name or

I set up rules to move email to 26 folders which are the letters of the
alphabet and I want to base the rules on the first letter of the sender's
name.

I tried rules for each letter, and there is no rhyme or reason to which
letter it puts in which folder. I even tried loading the rules from
Z...to...A, and that didn't help.

I'm using Outlook 2003, and I'm trying to filter about 26 * 18,000 emails.

Just curious; for what circumstances is this actually handy and prefered
over a "sort by name"?

The 2 GB limit for an Outlook .pst file requires me to split emails into 26
(or more) archive files, and I need my Saved files to match the archived
ones. I already have at least 1GB per alphabet in archived .pst files.

Ouch, one could argue if this then truly is the way to go. If genrating
these pst-files is already an issue how would you want to maintain them?
Sounds to me that you are better of with a CRM solution in this case.

The Archive functionality seems to work fine. I just appended A...Z to each
of the archive .pst files, and each got loaded with the corresponding Saved
email folder data. The problem is getting the right emails in the right
folders, or talking Microsoft into getting rid of the 2GB limit on .pst
files. Actually, I didn't know about that limitation until I had about 30gb
in the .pst file. I'm amazed it didn't break. Unless MS.DOS is reporting the
file sizes incorrectly. I downloaded the emails from Gmail, and they said I
only had 2gb of email data.

I didn't know CRM solutions handled emails. Does Microsoft have one?

Outlook doesn't have a 2GB pst-file-size-limit since Outlook 2003 when using
UNICODE pst-files.

CRM solutions allows you to store and links all sorts of communication.
Depending on your needs and size of your corporation consider;
