One way is to simply move the columns.

Select one column, move (edge-drag) it to the other side of the other column
holding Shift.

How do you "edge-drag" please? When I tired to grab the selected column it
merely inserted a new column adjacent. Am I missing something or is my
version (excel97) too out of date? :>(

One way would be to highlight the column you're going to move, and gently
place the cursor over the edge of the column until it changes from a cross to
an arrow. Then you can simply hold down the left mouse button and drag it to
your desired location. Hope this helps..

The trick is to select the column header first.
Hold down the SHIFT key then slide the cursor down to the edge of the top
cell.
You will get a black "move" cross.
Left-click and drag left or right then drop.

I've tried your suggestion and can't get it to work in the way expected. The
columns are NOT exchanged. The cursor changes in the Header cell to the
black line with 2 opposing arrows, and as the cursor is slid down to the
edge of the main column it changes to a white arrow.
I get a message which asks if I want to replace the contents of the
destination
column and giving the options "ok" or "cancel".
Cancel doesn't do anything - obviously ! - while ok does exactly what was
promised and I have "lost" the contents of the destination column as
predicted.
Still ;>(

Are you holding the SHIFT key while doing this? Doesn't sound like it to me.
Select the column by clicking on the letter(say F).
Move mouse pointer down to right edge of F1. See a two-headed arrow?
Hold SHIFT key and left-click on F1 border. Drag to left one column and
release mouse button.
F will swap with E. The F and E won't change, just the data will swap.
Cannot explain more than this.

Just for the record I'm a seasoned {over 10 years}excel user, but in just
that capacity I'm always open to the idea that I'm overlooking something
quite simple. The instructions from both of you seemed absolutely clear to
me, but it was just not happening as you both suggested it would or should
!! After scores of tries at different combinations of buttons and keys I
have at last discovered why - I had been mis-understanding or mis-applying
your instructions.
After selecting the column by clicking the header letter in the usual way,
when the cursor hovers over either edge of the header cell the cursor
changes as expected from a white cross to a 2 headed horizontal arrow; if at
that point I hold down both the shift key and the left mouse button and
slide down the right or left side of the column the double headed arrow
remains as described but if I drag to right or left the selected column is
merely increased in size.
However if AT THAT STAGE I do NOT hold down key or button but simply slide
the cursor down either side of the column, the double headed arrow changes
to a single white arrow; and if I then hold down both the shift key and the
left mouse button, the edge of the selected column turns into a greyed line
which jumps from cell edge to cell edge as it is dragged to left or right.
When the mouse button is released the selected column is inserted between
the cells on either side of the greyed line.
Whilst it is possible thereby to exchange ADJACENT columns in one move, you
have to swap non-adjacent columns by 2 separate moves.
I hope that is useful.
