I'd like to know the correct way to enter contact phone numbers that have
extensions (555-1234, ext 100) so Outlook can recognize them and dial them
properly when I want to call that contact through Outlook.

That depends on the service you're dialing and the type of modem you have, I
imagine. I'd try 555-1234-100 or, if you need to wait for a response before
the extention, try 555-1234w100. Remember: this is a guess.
