how do I enter info on templates without shifting whole document..

how do I enter info into contract templates without shifting the whole
document? For example, I have to enter the day, month, year, name of persons
involved in the contract, and any contingencies they have.
Right now, I have underlined spaces within the sentence where this info
needs to be. If I type on the underlined spaces, it shifts the rest of the
document.
Hopefully, someone understands what I am trying to ask and can help.
