How do I enable the delete key in Word and Outlook?

In both Word and Outlook, when I highlight text and press the "delete" key on
the keyboard, nothing happens. I have to highlight and press the "backspace"
key or use the "cut" function to remove text. Nothing in the help area seems
to address this. Any advice out there?

Tools > options > general - uncheck the two Word Perfect options.
Tools > options > edit > check typing replaces selection.
