I have just migrated from Outlook Express to Outlook 2003. When a new message
is downloaded, there is a duplicate of each in the Inbox.

Are you saying each downloaded message is duplicated? Do you have an
antivirus program scaning incoming mail? If so, try disabling that feature.

Is the option "Leave a copy of messages on the server" enabled that you
find in the advanced settings in your POP3 account? If so, you should
install SP2 for Office 2003 [1]. This behavior [2] has been fixed with
SP2. If this service pack is already installed on your computer try to
fix the problem by creating a new Outlook profile

Control Panel | Mail | Show profiles

Sometimes. There was a recent acknowledgement from Microsoft echoed in this
group that indicates some occurrences of this have not been addressed.
