How do I edit a document that has been sent via email as picture?

I'm trying to edit a doc someone has sent to me for editing, but it's on a
letterhead, and looks like it's scanned (when I dbl click on it, it brings up
the "picture" tool box). Is there a way to convert it to an editable text
file and save the formatting? I do have the same program by which it was
created by the other party. I want to save the background letterhead too,
the template for which I do not have on my computer. Thanks!

You would need optical character recognition (OCR) software to do that. If
you're using a recent version of Office, Microsoft Office Document Imaging
can do OCR (although, not perfectly, IMO). Check in Programs - Microsoft
Office - Microsoft Office Tools. If you don't see it, then it's possible
that you either did not install it, or that you have an older version of
Office.
