i have a word document that i copied from my old computer (windows 2000) to
my new computer (windows vista premium) and it wont copy in exactly the same
format to the works word processor document. when i click on edit on the
original version, the open for editing button is not highlighted so it wont
work.

yes the original was a word 97-2003 document. i am viewing it in word viewer.
i tried to copy i onto a works doc but the format was different. so i tried
to edit it instead and it wouldnt click on the "open for editing" button in
edit. help! thanks.

I need to see if I read your issue correctly. You're trying to edit a Word
document (version not stated) in Works (version not stated). Is that
correct?

Word viewer is not a Word editor. You need Word to edit Word documents,
however recent versions of Works should be able to open the document
directly. Even Wordpad will open it (though will not be compatible with all
aspects of the document).

Vista is the operating system, Word is a word processor. Yes, you need to
purchase a word processor. If you thought it was included because that's
what you were told, you need to speak to the sales clerk.

If you had a word processing program on your old computer and have the
installation disc, then you may be able to install it on the new computer.
Otherwise to use Word, you will have to buy it (though there is a working
trial of Office 2007 that will get you started .... for a while until the
trial expires).

i have installed office 2003 and am still having problems. despite
downloading all the updates, when i try to copy my documents onto a word
document, it wont copy in exactly the same format and then if i do save it in
word, when i later open it, it is not in word but in wordpad, with completely
different format. does anyone understand this and can help? is this because
vista is a complete nightmare like i have heard? (i cannot afford to buy the
new office 2007).

If you use edit > paste special > plain text the text should be pasted with
the format of the document into which it is being pasted.

If by the Wordpad format you mean that a document clicked from Explorer
opens in Wordpad rather than Word then this is a file association issue -

no, i am creating an office 2003 word document (copying it from a works word
processor document and making required changes), saving it onto the desktop
as a word file, but it will only open in a wordpad format, not word, thus
losing all formatting. i tried your suggestion of reregistering word, but
this didnt help.
