How do I disconnect an automated backup?

Someone gave me a computer w/ Outlook 2000. Every time I open the program, I
get an error box with the heading, "Personal Folders," and the message, "The
file C:\DocumentsandSettings...backup.pst could not be found." (I omitted
non- essential info from the file name.) If I hit the "ok" button, I can't
get anywhere; I have to close it by clicking on the red X, and then another
window pops up that reads "Create/Open Personal Folders File." My guess is
the previous owner, in deleting his personal files, deleted the path the
backup is trying to take. So how do I tell the system to quit looking?

Are you able to get into the program at all?

Yes, though it sometimes locks up as I'm trying to get past those pop-ups and
I have to close out of the program and re-open it. In order to get in, I have
to click on the top right corner of the first mini-screeen (if I hit the "ok"
button, it leads to more problems), and likewise cancel out of the next
pop-up window.

OK, then once Outlook is running, go to Tools | Options | Other tab |
Advanced Options | COM Add-Ins. See if the "Outlook Backup Addin" is listed
there. If so, remove it, click OK on all the open dialog boxes, then restart
Outlook and see if that has fixed the problem.

With Outlook closed, find and delete your extend.dat file. Outlook will
rebuild it next time you open the program. If you're using Windows 2000 or
XP, make sure you search within hidden folders to find that file.

Tried that remedy, but the problem still exists. Question: In the same folder
as the extend.dat file are two other files--archive.pst and outlook.pst.
Could one of those be the issue? I'm hesitant to delete them without knowing
their function.

You should probably leave those two files alone -- they are data files and
may contain valid data (in fact, the outlook.pst file may be your main data
file).

You may have to follow the instructions in the following article to delete
the reference to the old backup.pst file, unless you have Outlook 2000
configured in Corporate/Workgroup mode (you'd have a Services item on your
Tools menu if you were in C/W mode -- if you are in Internet Mail Only mode
uou will have Accounts instead of Services).
