how do i create a tick by clicking on a cell

could someone please tell me how to create a tick or a cross in a cell just
by clicking on it?

Format the cell(s) as Wingdings2 and then hold the ALT key while entering
080
on the number pad.

I prefer using the lowercase-A or letter "a" (without the quotes)
and Formatting with the Marlett Font.
