how do I create a databse of name, adresses etc.

I need a databse of customers that I can filter by neighborhood, past and
current clients etc. Can I do that in Word? I am new to this, so please be
very specific. I like instructions like "click on..., then point and click"
etc.
When I get that done, how do I do the mail merge function.
Thank you so very much for any help.
 
This is MUCH easier to do, and much more functional, if done in a spreadsheet
like Excel or database like Access.
