How do I create a cross reference list in a Master Document?

I am trying to use a Master Document to create a series of training documents
with "mix and match" sections. I want to create a list at the beginning
showing the examples for this particular course. Each example is held in a
separate sub document so that they can be updated and included in multiple
courses independently.
I bookmarked the sub doc names and then create a bulleted list cross
referencing to them but "next page" breaks are then inserted in between each
item in the list and it won't allow me to remove them.
How can I create a cross referenced list without page breaks?

Have you considered inserting a table of contents? This assumes that each
example document has a title that can be formatted in a specific paragraph
style. See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.

Note also that master documents can cause document corruption. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm. INCLUDETEXT
fields can be used instead; see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/includetextfieldscontent.htm.

Thanks for your suggestion. I thought of a table of Contents but couldn't see
that I could get that to apply to just a section of the contents. There are
several sections - Intro, preamble, generic pages etc - that I don't want in
my list.
