How do I create a black and white reverse panel in a document?

I want to create a black and white reverse panel at the top of a document.
This was easily done in WordPerfect. Is is possible in Word and how do I do
this?

Use the Drawing tools to draw a rectangular box and fill it with black; send
it behind text. Then change your font color to white.

And, since you can almost always find at least two ways to do anything
in Word, here's another method:

In Format > Font, set the font color to Automatic if it isn't already
set to that.

In Format > Borders & Shading, on the Shading tab, make sure the
"Apply to" box is set to Paragraph. Select black fill, and click OK.
