How do I copy formatting from one worksheet to several others?

I want to copy some formatting to other worksheets in a workbook. I've been
trying to use the format painter, but I'm missing something. Any help is
appreciated.

Select the relevant range, copy, go to the new worksheet, choose
Paste--Special-->Formats.

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for :
select the area you want to copy and right click and choose copy
then go to the other worksheet click on the cell where you want the
paste to occur from
and then right click and choose paste special and select the option
you want to paste with Eg: formats

With both files open; click the cell with the required format and click the
Format Painter tool - the mouse point is now an open cross with a paint
brush to its right. Open the second file by clicking its tab on the Windows
Status Bar and then click the cell that need the format.

So far so good, but what if you have many cell that need the format? Start
by DOUBLE clicking the Format Painter. Now when you open File B you can
click as many cells as you wish. To turn of Format Painter use the ESC key
or click the Painter icon once more.

You can select the entire sheet you want to copy by pressing Ctrl^A, then
move to the sheet you want to copy to and select 'Paste Special' from the
Edit menu. Then check 'Formats' in the option box that opens. That will copy
all formats including column widths, row heights, fonts, highlights..
everything except the values of the cells, which will remain iunchanged.

A related question: is there an easy way to copy formatting such as borders
and colours, but leave number formatting (eg. decimal places) as it is? Often
I want one without the other.
