How do I complete check boxes on a form? Is there a shortcut key?

I have received a form in Word that has check boxes. How do I "check off"
the boxes?

Many thanks

If check boxes are created as form fields (via the Forms toolbar in case of
Word 2003 or earlier), the document must be protected for forms in order for
the check boxes to work. You should then be able to check a check box by
clicking directly on it. You should alto be able to move the focus to a check
box using the Tab key and then press the Spacebar to check the selected box.

If that does not work, the problem could be that the document has not been
protected for forms or that the check boxes are not at all real check boxes
but simply square characters of some kind.

Note that in a protected form you can only access the form fields. If you
click in any text or other items that are not part of a form field, the
cursor will jump to the nearest form field after that spot. If you can select
any text in the document, it is not protected.

You can check whether the check boxes are form fields:
Press Alt+F9 (toggle field codes). Check box form fields will appear like
this:
{ FORMCHECKBOX }
Press Alt+F9 again to toggle the field codes again.
