How do i close outlook 2003

Hi the problenm i have is that when i run outlook 2003 it all works ok and i
see a icon in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen but
then when i close outlook the icon in the notification sometime stays there
and sometimes dissapers but if i try to backup my Outlook folder it says it
is still locked by outlook even when outlook is not running. i have tried
surgestion on other posts in this forum but nothing works.
Can anyone help please.
