how do I clear the start up settings on a new blank document?

Everytime I open Word Doc. there is a letter already there- I have to delete
it everytime I want to start up something new- even when I select to start a
new blank- well it is not blankthe same letter appears- HOW CAN I CLEAR THE
SETTING??
