How Do I clean up my registry file?

I see that my registry file contains items from software
that was uninstalled, software that was deleted as well as
older versions of current softftware. For Example I am
using IE6, but I see references in the registry to older
versions. The same is true for other software. I am
worried about simply deleting things without knowing the
possible impacts or repercussions.

I would think that these items are contributing
significantly to the sluggishness I am experiencing.

I would appreciate any any advice or sugestions that you
have used to eliminate these problems
