If you already started to create your document in Word 2007 using the
default settings (by clicking New and then clicking Blank document), you can
change the formatting to look like the default formatting in earlier
versions of Word. To do so, you switch to a different style set and font
set.

On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Change Styles.
Point to Style Set, and click Word 2003.
In the Styles group, click Change Styles
Point to Fonts, and under Built-in, click Office Classic.

Read that page - there are some very good directions from making changes to
suit your needs.

Or, if you want to learn how to use Word 2007, you can do the following:
Home Tab - far right of menu look for a set of binoculars (Editing tab).
Click on it then click on Select. Choose Select All - this will
automatically select all of your page for editing. Be careful not to click
again anywhere on your document. It will unselect everything. Then go to the
next tab which is Styles. I assume your page is Maximized at this point,
because if it is Minimized, my directions would be different. Go back to the
Change Styles tab (next one over from the binoculars) and click on the little
arrow that's on the bottom right-hand corner diagnally of the tab. It looks a
little faded as if you can't click on it. Not the arrow right under the words
Change Styles. Choose the 5th option "No Spacing". All your document will
revert to regular single-line spacing. You need to do it only once to a
document. Once it's saved with the single-spaced option, it will stay that
way. You can also do this before you enter any information on your blank
page - then it will not be necessary to do all the steps of selecting
anything. Double spacing by default is the 2007 way of creating documents.
Hope this helps.

To clarify, "double spacing" is not the default in Word 2007. Rather, the
Normal style uses 1.15 spacing and 10 points Spacing After. You can change
this by changing to the Word 2003 style set using Home | Styles | Change
Styles | Style Set. If you also want to use the same fonts as in Word 2003,
choose Office Classic under Change Styles | Fonts.

I didn’t give her the exact statistics since she mentioned that she was not
computer literate and did not want to add any further confusion. Until you
deal with Word 2007 on a regular basis, it can be very confusing for the
average user. For those who are not computer literate and who use Word for
everyday typing, they’re more familiar with the usual terms of “single†or
“double†spacing. I know I faced the exact same thing she is now facing when
I first opened a document in Word 2007. Until I learned the ins and outs of
the new Word, I related better to the “old and familiar terms†of things. As
in some cases, you can accomplish the same thing through different methods.
I prefer the shortest way. Sometimes, too much information just muddles
things.
