How Do I Change File Name Description?

How do i change the File Name Description in Windows Explorer and Save/Open
dialog boxes?

For example, *.doc documents have a File Name Description of "Microsoft
Office Word 97 - 2000 Document." I'd like to shorten this to "Word Document".

I am running Vista Ultimate.

Hi Brett--

Maybe I'm in the wrong place but I assume you mean the name description of
any of your documents that are accessed in the Documents folder. The
documents folder can be accessed of course either on the start menu or if
the Explorer tree from any way you reach it (rt. click start>explorer>more
in left pane for example. If there is some other place you're accessing
them and can't change the name, please let me know.

When I right click any given doc, I get a rename on the context menu, or I
could right click>properties>and rename it there.

No, I don't want to change the file name. I want to change the file type
description (i.e. Microsoft Word Document").

I think you should search the registry, e.g.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12 for MS Word 2007 ...

A few concerns about this...

1. Is this the only registry location where the file type is stored? For
most, I think it's stored in multiple keys.

2. I was sort of hoping there'd be something in Control Panel that would let
me do this instead of having to manually edit the registry. Also, I want to
change a number of the file type descriptors, and manually editing the
registry for each of them (as well as any other references in the registry)
isn't my idea of a fun time! <g>

3. Is this yet another easy change under XP that Vista made complex and
convoluted (if not impossible)?
