How do I cancel auto fill for dates?

When I type say 3/4 in a cell the date 03April2004 appears in that cell, even
though I don't want a date. How can this feature be temporarily bypassed.
 
Either format the column as Text before you start to enter data, or precede
each entry with an apostrophe, i.e. '3/4
