How do I boot up in MS-DOS mode

D

Dave Patrick

There is no "Dos mode" with Windows 2000 you'll need to boot a win98 floppy.

Dave, thanks for your help...when I try this however, it
doesn't recognize my c: drive, which I want to format.
Any suggestions?

To what end are you formatting? Are you reinstalling? To do a clean install,
either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four
install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the
\bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or
makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Dave, I want to remove w2k altogether and install XP on
this laptop. I got this laptop from work, they are
upgrading to new laptops, so I want to use this for my
personal use. My problem is deleting this OS so I can
put on XP. Since XP won't upgrade from 2000 I need to
delete it somehow. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Dave, thanks again for the information. However, I tried
running the XP install disk and it gives me an error
message that I can't upgrade from 2000 to XP. I was
wondering if I could load 98 on first and then XP. I
think I need a miricle...

Don't run from Windows 2000. Boot the CD-Rom.

CD-Rom in the drive and restart the pc. You'll possibly set the boot order
in cmos setup to CD-Rom first.

That's an XP Home Edition Upgrade version that you have? In that case
as you have found out XP home will not upgrade Windows 2000, because...
well because then it would become XP Professional, there is no upgrade
path between the two. I have not yet installed XP Home let alone XP
Home Upgrade but I imagine that the upgrade most likely works like other
Windows upgrade editions. If this runs like earlier OS upgrades you
don't need to install W98 in order to use the install XP, when it says
that it can't find an operating system to upgrade just stick the w98 cd
in the drive and it should then be satisfied of proof of previous
ownership and qualifying product. I can't see why XP Home would refuse
to wipe W2K and then install itself but I guess that's how it works.

If so then boot with your W98 boot disk and use fdisk to remove the
Windows 2000 partition then recreate the partition. Don't bother
formating it if you intend to use NTFS, XP will format it for you. The
reason that your W98 can't format the drive is because it is NTFS and
DOS doesn't see it. If you can't delete the partition with fdisk then
use delpart.exe to get rid of the partition then use fdisk to create new
partition. Delpart is available here:

You'll need to check your mobo manual for instructions. Look for the
keystroke at POST to enter cmos setup.

thanks, I am now at the step of formating the new drive
(I did all the steps you previously told me to do). I
have 4 choices for formating and not sure which to do..
Quick NTFS, Quick FAT, then NTFS or FAT. It looks like
the default is NTFS. Can you give me a recommendation?

Dave Patrick

Choose NTFS. NTFS is the native file system of Windows XP

Dave, I am now at the point of reinstalling XP. I've
redone the partion, then restarted install and am at the
point of formating the partion. It gives me four
choices: NTFS (Quick), FAT (Quick), NTFS annd FAT. Not
sure which to choose. It looks like the default is the
plain NTFS.

Can you give me a recommendation?

Thanks for your help.
