How do I attache a template to a document?

I am typing manuscripts and they use a specific format. How do I make a
template with the repeated margins, headers, etc, so I can use it with all of
those manuscripts requiring those specifics? How do I use it once I create
it? If I make a change in anything in that document related to the
formatting, will it affect every document attached to that template?

Once you have created the document margins etc that you need, goto FILE >
SAVE AS once there type the name you wish to call the template. Just below
the file name change it from Word Document in the drop down list to Template.
Click on Save. Then to open the template Open word and then click on FILE >
NEW and the template window should come up, select the name of your template
and hey presto. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you for your response. If I make a change in anything in that document
related to the formatting, will it affect every document attached to that
template? The document I create with that template is then saved as a .doc,
correct?

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm. Note
that new documents based on a template inherit its layout and styles but the
"umbilical cord" between template and document is severed at creation. If
you later make changes in the template, they will not be reflected in the
document. If you reattach the template with "Automatically update document
styles" checked, styles in the document will be updated, but changes in
layout or content will not be propagated.
