i am using powerpoint from office professional 2003. i am working on a
collaborative presentation with a few college friends and one of them has
applied this pinwheel effect. i would like to apply the same effect to my own
section of the presentation so it flows better with hers. how do i do it?

Croenan,
Select your text, activate the custom animation taskpane, click on add
effect, choose entrance, more effects, under the exiting category choose
pinwheel - OK. Now double click on the effect in the taskpane, on the first
tab Effect, at the bottom you will be able to choose wether the effect is to
be applied on your text as a whole, on the words or the individual letters.

If you are talking about individual objects on the slide...
Are you looking for the effect named pinwheel (which brings in the shape
spinning and growing), or the effect that looks like a stationary pinwheel
(which is called wheel)? Try both of them and see which one comes closest to
what your friend is doing. These affects are available from Slide Show-->
Custom Animation (as Luc described)

If you are talking about transitioning between slides....
Here, it is called "Wheel" and you have a choice of the number of spokes. To
get to these, bring up the Slide Transition task pane (Slide Show--> Slide
Transition) and scroll down to the option you want. Choose whether you want
the transition to happen after a click or at a specific time (or whichever
happens first). If you want to apply the transition to the current slide,
you are done at this point. If you want to apply it to all slides, Click
either the apply to master or apply to all slides button.
