I want to be able to apply a master to a certain type of slide layout. E.g.
If I select the slide with Title and Content only I want master "a" to be
applied. If I select Title and 2 Content Slide layout I want master "b" to
be applied.

If you are using PowerPoint 2003 or earlier, you can only apply two linked
masters -- the tite master for the title slide, and the slide master for all
other slides. You can get over this limitation in PowerPoint 2002 and 2003
by using multiple master sets (each comprising at least a slide master, but
can also include the title master).

PowerPoint 2007 lets you do more with slide layouts -- and you can have all
different slide layouts that look as different as you want as part of just
one master.
