How do I allocate more space to backup drive D?

My backup drive D in Windows Vista is full up and I can't seem to be able to
empty it or allocate more space to it. It only has 9.99GB of space allocated
to it and my computer is now complaining that it can't backup. Does anyone
know how to allocate more space to it, or should I just delete everything on
it?

<sigh> this is getting silly. Your Backup drive is NOT FOR YOU TO MAKE
BACKUPS ON - it contains files that you need to restore your machine to
factory condition. DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!!!!

That's all very well, but I'm getting error messages constantly because the
drive is full up and my computer can't backup. This is a problem and there
must be a solution.

Yes there is - set a DIFFERENT location for your backups - preferably
removable media such as an external HDD....

D drive is NOT a backup drive. In your case, it is a RECOVERY PARTITION.

Purchase an external backup solution from your favourite computer store..

theislandman - some explanation - today the majority of OEMs do not provide
operating system or application restore disks - instead they create a
recovery partition (usually "D" and about 9 - 10 gigs) that contains an
image of "everything" installed when new. At one time the partition was
hidden to prevent corruption and/or users attempting to store data on it.

The presence of a recovery partition is verified by a MBR (Master Boot
Record) addition, something like the following appearing at boot "Hit F10 to
restore...". OEMs usually provide an utility to copy the partition to
removeable media (DVD/CD), make the space available and remove the MBR info.
